“The Road to Rebuilding: A Journey“The Road to Rebuilding: A Journey of Resilience with Nika Holidays”
WRITTEN BY: LINGANATHAN @ NATHAN
If someone had told me years ago that I would one day own my own travel agency, I might not have believed them. My journey in the travel industry started as a driver—a humble beginning that taught me valuable lessons about hard work, perseverance, and the importance of great service. Today, as the founder of Nika Holidays, my story is a testament to resilience and the ability to rebuild.
As Nelson Mandela once said:
“It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
These words guided me through every setback and victory alike.
The Early Days as a Driver
My first step into the world of travel was working as a driver for a tour company. Back then, I was simply focused on doing my job well—ensuring that every journey was safe and enjoyable. Driving tourists around, I learned firsthand what made a travel experience truly memorable and began to understand the inner workings of the industry.
Building Nika Holidays
Inspired by my experiences, I took a leap of faith and decided to create my own travel agency—Nika Holidays. I aimed to offer personalized travel experiences that went far beyond just getting from point A to point B. My first major break came when I organized a family trip to Kuala Lumpur. Seeing the smiles on their faces and hearing their praises confirmed that my vision was on the right path.
The COVID-19 Setback: Starting Over
Then came the COVID-19 pandemic—a crisis that shook the travel industry to its core. Faced with plummeting bookings and uncertain times, I had to make some of the toughest decisions of my life. We sold all our vehicles and buses and closed down the office. It was a painful moment, but it was necessary to protect my family.
During this challenging period, I returned to my roots. I resumed driving—not out of passion for the role, but out of necessity to support my family. It was a humbling experience that reinforced my commitment to the travel industry and showed me that sometimes, you must start over before you can rebuild.
A Fresh Start in 2022
As the world slowly began to recover and the travel industry showed signs of life again, I felt a renewed sense of purpose. In 2022, I relaunched Nika Holidays with fresh energy and a revamped vision. With hard-earned lessons from the past, I rebuilt the business to be more agile, customer-centric, and prepared for future challenges.
Today, Nika Holidays offers:
- Customized travel itineraries
- Hotel bookings and private transfers
- Tours across Malaysia and Singapore
- Personalized travel consultations for a seamless experience
Looking Ahead
Rebuilding after such a significant setback taught me the true meaning of resilience. My dream now is to expand Nika Holidays further across Asia, integrating modern digital tools to make travel planning even easier and more exciting for our clients.
Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
For anyone thinking about starting their own business, here’s what my journey has taught me:
- Start Small, Dream Big: Every great venture begins with humble beginnings.
- Embrace Setbacks: Tough times are just stepping stones to a stronger comeback.
- Build Strong Relationships: Trust and collaboration are the foundation of any successful business.
- Never Compromise on Service: A happy customer is the best advertisement.
- Keep the Faith: Remember, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.”
Final Thoughts
From my early days as a driver to the highs and lows of running and rebuilding Nika Holidays, my journey has been filled with challenges, lessons, and unforgettable moments. Every setback has only made the comeback sweeter. I am grateful for the opportunity to share my passion for travel and to help others experience the beauty of the world—even when the path to success isn’t always straightforward.
No matter how tough the road gets, remember: every setback is a setup for an even greater comeback.
